When a stray or rescued animal first arrives at our shelter, they are often malnourished, weak, and traumatized. Proper animal nutrition is not a luxury — it is medicine. A balanced diet:

Our Feeding Program at House of Happiness
Our team provides structured, twice-daily feeding schedules for all animals in our care. Each meal plan is tailored based on species, age, weight, and health condition.
Cats — True Carnivores
Cats have a high protein requirement and are obligate carnivores. At our Islamabad shelter, rescued cats receive:
- High-protein, feline-specific commercial food (AAFCO-standard when available)
- Wet food for hydration, especially for sick or dehydrated cats
- Kitten formula for animals under 1 year, with 3 meals per day
- Probiotic supplementation to reduce stress-related digestive issues

Severely Malnourished Animals — Re-Feeding Protocol
Animals who have been starved cannot receive large meals immediately. Our re-feeding program gradually reintroduces food over 7–10 days, starting with small, high-fat, high-protein portions up to 6 times daily to prevent digestive shock.
Post-Surgery & Medical Recovery
Animals recovering from surgery or illness receive soft, easily digestible meals and may receive nutritional supplements recommended by our veterinary team.
Pregnant & Nursing Mothers
Mother animals have dramatically increased caloric needs. We provide carbohydrate-rich, energy-dense diets and ensure unlimited access to fresh food and water throughout nursing.

Food donations (dry kibble, wet food, fresh chicken/meat) are also gratefully accepted at our shelter at Lehtrar Road, near Al Bader Mosque, Tarli, Islamabad.

Preferred food items: Royal Canin, Whiskas, Pedigree, Hills Science Diet, fresh cooked chicken (unseasoned), boiled rice with protein for recovery animals.
Note: Please do not donate expired, spiced, or onion/garlic-containing food. These are harmful to animals.

Frequently Asked Questions — Animal Nutrition
We feed our cats a high-protein, feline-specific diet including commercial kibble and wet food. Kittens receive specially formulated kitten food three times a day. Sick cats receive veterinary-guided nutrition plans.
Q: Can I donate homemade food?
We appreciate the love! However, homemade food must be plain (no salt, spices, onions, or garlic). Boiled chicken, plain rice, and boiled eggs are safe. Please call us before bringing homemade food to confirm suitability.
Q: How do I know my donation reaches the animals?
We publish daily work reports on our website showing feeding records, animal health updates, and photos. Our meal sponsorships include a photo update of the animals eating on your selected date.
Q: Do you follow any nutrition guidelines?
Yes. Our feeding protocols are guided by international standards including ASPCA shelter nutrition guidelines and AAFCO nutritional standards. Our veterinary team reviews our feeding program regularly
